Kvetching About: Epictetus

Epictetus once wrote, "Do not seek to have events happen as you want them to, but instead to want them to happen as they do happen, and your life will go well."

OK, so basically, Epictetus wants us all to STFU; not to complain, not to have false hope, not to go against the system. A tough position, so how does he defend it? Well, he goes on a well educated rant about the ideas that humans do not really know themselves...if they THINK they do. They are motivated by fear of death and the unknown, they have no control over their own destinies, and (on that point) they have less control when they believe themselves to have control.

While I see what he is getting at, he is definitely getting ahead of himself. No matter what reasoning you have, divine or otherwise, humans cannot reasonably be expected to have some sort of conscious 'want' for negative circumstances. As for the unconscious want, human instinct is primarily to live and to live well. Perhaps Epictetus is inferring that you need to take the bad with the good, but even unconsciously, the 'want' for negativity goes against basic human instinct. To be negative and to let bad things happen to you can ruin chances for survival. Apathy ruins life.

And who the hell is he to say who I am? He is not some sort of godhead, I am my own man.

And I have to write 1000 words on this...

I never seem to remember these things, do I? Exactly why I consciously put it off I don't know.

Back to finishing this godforsaken Endgame essay. Mr. Beckett, I don't care that you are already deceased, I am giving you my death stare.

Lots of things have gone down recently...I came down with the flu recently. Hit me like two tons of bricks and the powers that be (read: viruses) decided to open all floodgates and cause destruction in London (read: me). After complete exhaustion, I dragged myself through 11 hours on Amtrak, not getting up once. The good people at CSX are clearly out to get me. Mind you, better than being left a practical invalid alone in New York for three days...

I'm back up in Canada now, and am feeling much better. Mum+Kim are driving down tomorrow morning, but I was feeling out of place/sorts at the apartment anyway, so I'll be stay up here for a few more days before heading down again, hopefully by next Friday.

I'm really, really pissed off to be missing Kyle Hall @ Sunday Best. Someone in my age bracket (younger even!) and the promise of a good party with good friends...and I'll be languishing up here. Even the cats are ignoring me.

At least there's the one thing that will never say no...Youtube*.

Oh, hello world.

How have you been? There's been a lot that's happened with me lately...

I've finished high school, and it feels good. 

I'll be in Manhattan for the summertime, and will be actually keeping this blog updated.

A Mix For You

So. The time has come to post some of my DJ mixes. I would like to that many people, including the fine chaps at Ableton Live for creating such a wonderful program, Steve Mizek of www.littlewhiteearbuds.com for giving me some good tracks (and being a wonderful guy to boot), and of course Jimmy Savile (yes, that's right) for being the first DJ to use two continuous turntables and a microphone back in the 1940's, I think, giving birth to DJing as we know it today.

Anyways, the first mix. This is a mix I did that encompasses various shades of house music over the years. Many of these tracks were ripped from vinyl, so the fidelity and sound-quality might be a little low for some of the tracks, and I apologize in advance.

Well...it's been a long time since I've updated this. I've been busy with work and art and stuff like that...since I have a bit of free time this summer, I see it as prime time to get this blog back into motion.

I will be uploading some photos and working on a possible interview, so stay tuned.

Episode 1: Schoolyear In Review

Well, the first semester is officially over. What a semester it was! I'm still cleaning out my bag of all of the papers, but I shall tear myself away to write my opinions on each course. Overall, I am glad of my course choices. There were some issues, however, but overall it was good. 

English was very interesting, but it was hard to instantaneously function at 8:05 in the morning when you have woken up just over 30 minutes previously from another night laying awake as your conscious mind is resting but your sub-conscious is running the mental equivalent of the Boston Marathon every night... I do wish that the class would stop making fun of my mental processes though. Surely, fellow IB people should be able to understand about abstract thinking methods and hypothetical approximations, but no, they just have to tease me about it.

Excuse me, whilst I find something I just dropped.

Ah, found it. Where was I?

Nothing major can be said about Art; a few minor issues regarding a certain student's maturity level were not thoroughly solved, but it sort of petered out and we shall just have to see where it goes in the future. History was throughly interesting, but many students (who shall remain nameless) exuded throughly unacceptable behaviour throughout the semester

Hello. My name is Jason Rule, and this is my blog. This is a space were I can ramble about my thoughts, actions, and other ephemera. I am a fan of my music (mainly techno and jazz), cats, fine clothes, travel, comedy, and many other things. I also enjoy absurd humor much like you see now then now then what's going on-ward Christian Barnaard squad by the right number one two the fullback praise famous mental homes for loonies like me....
